As digitization increases, the tools and resources available to anyone with a website are growing. At the same time, competition is also increasing, making it more important than ever for businesses to measure and analyze their data. What data is relevant?
Google Tag Manager
Google Tag Manager, also known as GTM or Google Tag Management, is one of the many popular tools available in the Google Marketing Platform. With Google Tag Manager, you can quickly and easily manage all of your website’s tags (snippets of code) without making a single change to the code.
Using GTM, you can track valuable events on your website and import this data directly into e.g. Google Analytics, for example. Events can include everything from clicks on specific buttons and links, to scrolling and interaction with video content. The possibilities of GTM are many.
Why use Google Tag Manager?
The benefits of having GTM implemented are that you don’t have to go to a developer every time you need to make small changes to the code or implement something new on the website. GTM is easily implemented by inserting a short snippet of code into the website code. Once the snippet is in place, you can then make changes on your own in the Google Tag Manager interface. A big advantage of using a tag management tool like GTM is that you can preview your changes before going live on the site. This means that the margin for error is reduced, and your tracking is more accurate and right from the start.
Tags, Triggers & Variables
In Google Tag Manager, we come across a lot of different concepts that are worth knowing. Tags, Triggers and Variables are some of the most common ones.
- Tags: Is a snippet of code that sends data to a system, such as Google Analytics or Google Ads.
- Triggers: Captures specific events on the website, such as button clicks and page loads. If the trigger is in turn linked to a tag, an event is triggered.
- Variables: Is a name for a changeable value. For example, a specific product, a price or a date.
